本片讲述了性格火辣爽直的李双双（张瑞芳 饰）爱管闲事，对自私爱贪生产队便宜的人直言快语当面指责。她的丈夫孙喜旺（仲星火 饰）却和她相反，胆小怕事爱面子还大男子主义。生产队修水渠，李双双和几个闲着在家没事的妇女去参加劳动，喜旺大为恼火叫李双双在家做饭看孩子伺候他。为此，两 人大吵了一架。双双向生产队提意见，反应对妇女评工分计分混乱不认真，又向公社党委揭发当记工员的喜旺、副队长金樵(刘非 饰）和社员孙有（崔文顺 饰）干活不负责任、投机取巧多记工分。她被群众选上了妇女队长后，喜旺怕以后管不了双双，给她约法三章，双双不答应，喜旺生气离家赶着马车去搞运输了。孙有夫妇攀高枝要把女儿桂英嫁到城里去，桂英早有喜欢的人了，跑去找双双帮忙把来相亲的对象打发走。孙有老婆找到双双大闹，正好让刚回家的喜旺碰上，喜旺再次生气离家...... 本片曾于1963年获第2届《大众电影》百花奖最佳故事片奖、最佳编剧奖，最佳女演员奖，最佳配角奖。
